Hey guys I wanted to show everyone my little secret fishing hole. The fish were hitting at the end of the trip but overall anytime you can be out on the water it doesn’t matter if the only thing biting are the bugs its still a GREAT time. I hope you enjoy it.

www.eveningsecretfishing.com – A swarm of fish being created by an old school fishing weapon this guy calls the “Evening Secret”.

I love fishing at night.

It is a much better time to fish.  Most fishermen know that fish are attracted to lights at night, and when you have the green light of the “Evening Secret” in the water, the number of fish you will attract will amaze you.   After 30 minutes or so,  the baitfish started  swarming  around the light. Heaps of whitebait, (A New Zealand delicacy), and then below them some inanga  (Smelt).   Further down the swarming cone were small mullet and undersized snapper. The fish got larger and larger going downwards, and it was hard to see any further down.  The water almost completly obliterated with fish.

Kingi’s and Kawhai circled the edge of the light snapping at the whitebait and inanga.   We dropped live baits around the edge of the light, and soon had our limit of  Snapper and Kingi.  The feeding frenzy continued throughout the entire time we fished.

I wanted to understand why the fish were so attracted to the Evening Secret.  What is the effectiveness of the green lights?  Almost all bioluminescent creatures, plankton,  are bluish green in colour. With the Evening Secret emitting a green light, which travels further in the water than white light, the fish are soon lured towards you.  While you can have both floating and submersible lights, I have found the Evening Secret to be more effective when it is submerged.  Maybe this is because it can penetrate deeper into the water, and throw a wider light beam.

Knowing where to fish, and anchoring your boat correctly into the current, and also having the right bait for your selected species, will ensure an effective and enjoyable fishing trip.  Remember to take some bait with you.  Even though the Evening Secret will bring bait fish to you, never assume there will be enough for you to catch, or that you will be able to catch the bait fish.  Using dip nets is a great way to catch any bait fish,  but make sure the net is fine enough to catch the whitebait too, during the New Zealand whitebait season. (This is from 15th August to 30th of November, inclusive.)

What can I say? Just enjoy.  Having the Evening Secret is tremendous fun.  With some areas becoming fished out, it has been much harder to catch anywhere near the bag limit.   Now it doesn’t  really matter.  I can go out again tomorrow.
